Cognitive Neuropsychology and Development

With our research, we want to understand how our brain makes the images, thoughts, words and sentences that animate our mental life, and create our societies. In our research, we seek to pursue the highest standards of scientific rigor, inclusivity and equality.
Members

Liuba Papeo, Ph.D. –Research director at the CNRS, European Research Council grantee, team leader, director of the Cognitive Neuropsychology and Development team and of the Baby Lab of Lyon, Liuba received her Ph.D. in neuroscience from the International School for Advanced Studies (Trieste) and conducted research on language, concepts and perception, at Harvard University, the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience (London), the Center for Mind/Brain Science (University of Trento) and University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona).

Jean-Rémy Hochmann, Ph.D. –Research director at the CNRS, team leader and director of the Baby Lab of Lyon, Jean-Remy holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the International School of Advanced studies of Trieste and has conducted research at the Harvard University (USA) and at the Ecole Normale Superieure of Paris. His research focuses on the development of human-unique abilities such as language and logic, on attention and consciousness.

Emilie Serraille –Lab manager of the Baby laboratory. Emilie holds a Master’s degree in Psychology from the Lumière University of Lyon 2. She joined the team in 2021, after working in human resources and as a preschool teacher in New Zealand.

Céline Spriet, Ph.D. –Postdoctoral fellow, Celine was first a PhD student in our team, and obtained her PhD in Neuroscience in 2024. After a period as visiting researcher at the Western Sydney University, Celine re-joined the team as a postdoc. Celine investigates the organization and development of object categories in the human brain, testing human infants and adults with eye-tracking, EEG and fMRI.

Manuel Mello, Ph.D –Postdoctoral fellow, Manuel joined the team in 2023 after obtaining a PhD in Social Neurosciences from the University “La Sapienza” of Rome. His current research addresses the development of the cognitive and neural mechanisms for social cognition using behavioral methods and fNIRS in young infants, children and adults.

Farzad Rostami, Ph.D. –Postdoctoral fellow, Farzad joined the team in 2023 after obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Tehran. His research focuses on visual object perception and the neural markers of conscious processing of visual information in infants and adults, using fNIRS, EEG, and in artificial neural networks.

Sofie Vettori, Ph.D. –Marie Curie Postdoctoral fellow, Sofie joined the team in 2021, after obtaining a PhD in Neurosciences from the University of Leuven. Sofie works on the perception of visual scenes involving multiple objects, in neurotypical subjects as well as individuals with autism, using EEG and behavioral methods.

Sara Dochez –PhD student (3nd year), Sara is also a clinical researcher assistant at the diagnostic center for Autism of the psychiatric hospital Le Vinatier (Bron). Her PhD project addresses the limits of attention and perception in the neurotypical population as well as in children and adults with autism.

Violette Munin –PhD student (3nd year), Violette holds a Master Degree in Psychology from the University of Lille. Her PhD project investigates the neural mechanisms for understanding social interactions, using fMRI, EEG and behavioral methodologies.

Samar Naderi –PhD student (1st year), after obtaining a Master degree in Neuroscience from the University Claude Bernard Lyon1, Samar is conducting research on visual attention and categorization in infants and adults, primarily using EEG.
